The invention of the theremin and the life of its inventor – Russian physicist Leon Theremin – bring to light the roots of electronic music, against a backdrop of Soviet espionage and American high society.
The invention of the theremin heralds the birth of electronic music: new instruments, new sounds, new means to create music – all highly accessible.
It is also the history of technological advancements borne from the First World War, which served not only the musical domain, but also those of marketing and security.
In addition it is an immersion into a cultural world which reflects the political and economic realities of the time, a world which develops between US showbiz and Soviet propaganda.
Using historical video archives from the time as well as today, this conference tells an exciting story, complemented by various musical pieces played live on the theremin. The conference shows how the instrument works, as well as how it is played, and deals with questions ranging from musical genres and instruments to audacious technological discoveries, from cinema and music of the past to the art and artists of the future.
Over 50 representations have been received with success in middle schools, high schools, and music schools, as well as music festivals (Electrosanne, Electron). This conference is as entertaining as it is instructive!
